Moving indoors, the Zenfone 8 captured Merida’s likeness extremely well. Once more, the Zenfone’s shot is great, but the Pixel’s is better. The Pixel kept the scene subdued and rich, with the green of the trees lush and verdant. The Zenfone is almost overexposed again, with greens that border on oversaturated.
Again, you can see the slight differences between the two phones. I next took the phones to a part of the forest near my house. I wouldn’t call the Zenfone’s image bad, but the Pixel’s is definitely better. The Pixel, meanwhile, kept its shot toned down since the image was captured in shadow on a bright, sunny day. The color of the flowers is vibrant, yes, but it teeters on being too bright. In this shot of flowers, the Zenfone 8 overexposed the scene and the focus is a bit soft. But both phones are similar in price, and this lets us see just how good of a bargain the Zenfone 8 really is. It might seem a bit unfair to pit the Zenfone 8 against the Pixel 5 in the camera department, as Google’s phone still ranks among the best camera phones. For reference, the Pixel 5 has a 12.2MP primary and 16MP ultrawide. It has a 64MP wide-angle primary shooter and a 12MP ultrawide lens. The Zenfone 8 uses two camera lenses, not unlike the Pixel 5. The Zenfone 8 gets brighter in our testing at 727 nits versus the OnePlus 9’s 696 nits. That phone managed 199.4% of the sRGB and 141.3 of the DCI-P3 color gamuts in its default mode. It managed a Delta-E score of 0.27 - 0 is perfect, so the lower the number, the better.Ĭompare that to the OnePlus 9’s Delta-E of 0.28 for its AMOLED panel. In our testing, it reproduced 154.5% of the sRGB spectrum and 109.5% of the DCI-P3 gamut in its default color profile. While not quite as striking as the OnePlus 9’s display, the Zenfone 8’s screen is still very good. Or you can leave it in the auto mode, and the phone will adjust the refresh rate as needed, like we’ve seen on other phones recently. You'll also be able to use Overdrive or Libby to check out library books.You can lock the Zenfone 8’s display at 60Hz, 90Hz, or 120Hz.

There are lots of Android ereader apps you can use in place of its default ereading app, and even if you can't use the Nook app, you'll still be able to use the Kindle app, the Kobo app, and the Google Books app for buying new books. But I don't think a release date is available for the Nova yet, and if you need something sooner, the Likebook Mars is not so bad. Its built-in ereader isn't very useful unless you can read Chinese, and the Nook app doesn't work on it.

The Likebook Mars is superior in some specs, but its software is not the best. If you're more interested in Android, you might still wait for the Oynx Boox Nova. It will be better for reading than the Kobo app, and it is slightly bigger than the Likebook Mars. If you don't mind being tied to a particular book store, the new Kobo Forma could be a good one to get. This gives you more freedom than you would get with a dedicated device. As an Android device, it will support multiple ereading apps, and it will let you do more than just read books. We'll see what if anything they have to say! I got in touch with ArtaTech about these odd behaviors. They are probably fixable with firmware updates, and with the way I use the device aren't showstoppers, but I'd say proceed with caution, especially if you are the type of user who spends a lot of time interacting with the screen. So compared to the Obsidian, I still like the bigger, sharper display on the Explore (it's not sharper than the Onyx, just bigger) and the adjustable color temperature, but the Obsidian never did either of these weird things. (It never happens spontaneously if I haven't been touching the screen.) Since I'm mostly using the page turn buttons to interact with the device, this hasn't been a big problem for me, but it would drive me nuts if I were a heavy user of the touch screen and it kept happening. I think they call these "false touch" occurrences. adjusting Moon+ Reader settings or book info in the library), the unit has kind of lost its mind and acted like I took a bunch of actions I didn't actually take, like going to the light settings and adjusting it.
